Officiating any sport is extremely difficult. With so much going on, it's so easy to miss something, not to mention the subjectivity of what one official can call compared to another. We all see the sport in different ways, but all we can ask for as fans is consistency. If slight contact to the shooter is a foul for the home team, it should be for the away team too. If a wreck in turn three for one series brings out a caution for one race, it should for another race. Especially when those races are a mere two days apart.
It's no secret that being a professional athlete comes with pressure, but for some it weighs much more. Here are the 5 drivers I think are facing the most pressure entering the new season.
Death, taxes, and NASCAR being put into a tricky situation because of the rules they have implemented and allowed. These are the three guarantees of life and we saw the last one play out for the elimination race at Martinsville Speedway.
It seemed that we had set the drivers for the Round of 8 at the conclusion of Sunday's race at the Charlotte Roval, but an inspection penalty reshaped the grid.
The underdog story is the most popular in all of sports. A guy that starts from the bottom and simply grinds his way to the top. It’s a story that’s impossible to root against. But how long can someone be an underdog? How long until they’re turned on by the very people that have been rooting for them? How long until they are the most hated guy in the sport? For Corey Lajoie, his story changed in just a couple of years.
A full breakdown of my predictions for the drivers being eliminated in each round of the playoffs and what factors played into that choice
This season has made it clear that there needs to be some change in the way playoff drivers are decided. Here's why...
After three days of social media outrage, discussions, and questioning about what NASCAR will do about these situations, they finally came out with the penalty report on Wednesday. The result of this was an encumbering of Austin Dillon's win, a points penalty, a suspended spotter, and a fine for Logano.
This morning Michael McDowell, driver of the #34 for Front Row Motorsports, announced that he will not be returning to the team for the 2025 season. This news has come as a shock to many as McDowell has been the leader of the team since he first joined in 2018 and has since won two races with them including a Daytona 500
The Cup race on 5/5 at Kansas Speedway will go down in the record books for the closest finish in NASCAR history and the driver that will go with it is Kyle Larson. Larson stole the win from Chris Buescher by a margin of 0.001 seconds, which tops the 0.002 record set by Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch at Darlington in 2003.
Last night Corey Heim dominated the Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway leading over half the laps for his second win of the season. This result also means that he has yet to finish outside of the top 10 and only has two finishes outside of the podium in 8 races this season. Dominating over a Cup Series rookie despite problems with his digital dash at just 21 years old has people wondering, is Corey Heim really that good?
Denny Hamlin's 20 years in the Cup Series has been what you could only dream for as a young prospect with 54 wins and countless other impressive stats. However, there has been one thing that's eluded Hamlin every single year; a championship. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has finished in the top 5 of the standings 10 times, making it half of his career. This has been the only remaining criticism of Denny and gained him the label of being a choke artist, but this year could rewrite all of that.
Yet again, Brad Keselowski came so close to snapping his now 108 race winless streak, but he was ultimately beaten at the line at Talladega. Brad finished 2nd to Tyler Reddick after he was slowed down by a spinning Michael McDowell coming down the front stretch. His last win dates back to his days with Penske being at Talladega in 2021.
As Denny approached the restart zone, it’s clear that he had gotten a better jump before Truex and almost clears him before entering turn 1. A closer look from the TV angle shows Hamlin actually gaining distance on Truex before entering the restart zone. While some can argue that it could’ve been Truex backing off, looking at in car angles it becomes apparent then Denny did jump the restart.
On April 2nd, it was reported by Bob Pockrass and Jordan Bianchi that Justin Alexander will be stepping back on top of the pit box for Austin Dillon, replacing Keith Rodden. Rodden will be taking a more organizational role, the same thing was said when Alexander first stepped back from being a crew chief in 2022.
Since winning in his debut in the Xfinity Series, the lights have been shining on Ty Gibbs. Under those lights he has done nothing but perform amazingly. In that same Xfinity season he won four more races on a part time schedule. A few years later Ty is driving for his grandfather in the Cup Series and we’re all questioning when his first win will come, not if he will win.
Due to impending weather, NASCAR made the decision to move Saturday’s ARCA race to the conclusion of the truck race. With the timing of both races being extended due to cautions, it was clear that drivers were getting antsy for a win at one of the biggest venues NASCAR races at. In the end it was Venturini Motorsports’ Gus Dean that got his first win in the series. However, this win didn’t come without its fair share of criticism.
Recently Kyle Petty stated that Ryan Blaney is the new Kasey Kahne and this comment has not been taken lightly by fans. Many are quick to question the legitimacy of the claim due to Petty’s inability to live up to his name, but I am all for this. While the claim itself may not be the best analogy, I’m glad it was said.
The 2023 Daytona 500 saw a relatively low number of cautions compared to years past. While some see cautions as part of the sport and you can’t blame them for losing a race, Kyle Busch could certainly say that the caution that came late in this year's 500 cost him his first win in the Great American Race.
The Hall of Fame is held as an exclusive spot for drivers that have separated themselves with their talent. As Joey Logano won his second championship and earned his 31st career win, his hall of fame eligibility was called into question.
With NASCAR having so many different ways of developing drivers, there’s no shortage of young drivers making their way into the series. Whether it be dirt track racing like Kyle Larson or paved short tracks like Joey Logano, many disciplines can lead to NASCAR. With this constant influx of new drivers it’s hard to say who’s going to be the next big star until they prove it.
